Statement of the founding chairman

"Commitment to the region"
(by Dr. Reinhard Berger, deceased founding chairman of the society)

We live in the age of information and information technology. Therefore, the thesis that economic regions have special future prospects if they offer a favourable climate for research institutions and companies in the field of computer science can hardly be contradicted. But what can individual companies or institutions do to promote this idea?

In Weser-Ems there is already an answer: The support of OFFIS! Originating from the University of Oldenburg and still connected to it, however, it is legally, organisationally and financially independent.

The state of Lower Saxony has given OFFIS a clear regional mandate: Preliminary research in the field of computer science with practical relevance and know-how transfer into practice, preferably with partners from the region. To this end, the state provides the institute with long-term basic funding that enables it to work freely. As a number of joint projects with domestic companies and institutions have shown, this idea has already found a positive acceptance.

The Society of Friends of OFFIS e.V. has made it its' business to promote the concept and the claim of the institute in economy and administration of the Weser-Ems-Region and to encourage cooperation between the institute and cooperation partners for the benefit of both.
