The fast-growing share of distributed energy generation in the total production is a highly topical challenge concerning the organization, control, prognosis and optimization of decentralized energy generation. The pooling of many decentralized producers to so-called virtual plants is the focus of recent scientific discussions.
For this reason OFFIS participates in the "Forschungsverbund Energie Niedersachsen (FEN)" project funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture. FEN is composed of several universities and research institutions from all over Lower Saxony. Each project partner deals with a different task in the field of decentralized energy production. The project's mission is to investigate outstanding questions in the following areas:
- Power conditioning and storage
- Energy management and control
- Decentralized power generation, combined heat, cold and power
- Grid stability
The FEN project is divided into thirteen sub-projects. Sub-project 2 is carried out by the University of Oldenburg. Its goal is to design and analyze a control system for a cluster of decentralized energy systems. Sub-projects 1 and 6 are being handled by OFFIS. The mission of the former is the simulation of generation concepts and grid structures. The concern of the latter is the utilization of household appliances for load-shifting measures.
