Transparency in Pig Production (TiPP) Digitale Rückverfolgbarkeit und Transparenz entlang der Wertschöpfungskette Schwein in der Region Oldenburger Münsterland

Motivation

Society, trade and supervisory authorities are increasingly demanding more transparency and faster traceability along the entire pork value chain. This is demanded in the interest of food safety as well as animal and consumer protection (from farm to fork). Therefore, the targeted further development of digitalisation offers great potential for applications and improvements in this area. The TiPP project aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain based on self-sovereign digital identities (SSIs) while ensuring food safety and traceability. The project will also provide valuable insights for other industries looking to implement SSIs in their supply chains.

Goal

The main objective of TiPP is to improve transparency and traceability along the pig supply chain. This will be achieved by testing and developing a system of SSIs built on three essential technologies: Blockchain, Verifiable Credentials and Decentralised Identifiers (DIDs). The project focuses on understanding the challenges and opportunities of SSIs for the swine industry and developing practical applicable solutions. The basic idea of the project is that in addition to the actors in the value chain, each animal is also given an individual digital identity. As soon as data is generated on the farm (e.g. eETK, performance data, diseases, veterinary or zootechnical measures) or digital proofs from other actors (Verifiable Credentials, VCs; e.g. official/veterinary certificates, pedigree certificates, feed analysis certificates, slaughter records), these are assigned to the digital identity of the pig and/or farm and stored in its associated digital wallet (eWallet). The VCs can be viewed for the purpose of verification or as a basis for certification by other chain actors (e.g. marketing, control authorities) depending on previously defined powers, but cannot be changed afterwards. The automatic linking of digital identity and evidence not only makes documentation but also verification procedures along the value chain more efficient in the long term.

The research team is made up of experts from various disciplines such as veterinary medicine, information technology and agribusiness. Together they will work on the complex challenges facing the pig industry today. The project will also work with industry partners to ensure that the solutions developed are practical to implement. OFFIS will work closely with the University of Oldenburg to continuously incorporate the project's findings into the development of a prototype.
