Successful D-A-CH cooperation
Open exchange at the second workshop "Tools and Methods in Smart Grid Research" and successful execution of the eighth PhD student workshop Energy Informatics - both took place at the conference D-A-CH Energy Informatics 2017 in Lugano in Southern Switzerland at the beginning of October.
PhD Student Workshop Energy Informatics
Already for the eighth time the PhD student workshop Energy Informatics took place. It offers doctoral students in computer science who are involved in energy industry research a suitable discussion forum and thus closes the gap between events in electrical and energy engineering and pure computer science conferences. The workshop was organized by the Oldenburg computer science institute OFFIS under the umbrella of the GI group Energy Informatics (EI/WI-EINS) and is supported by a program committee of established energy computer scientists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This year, doctoral students from France, Austria and Germany presented their dissertation projects for discussion - including two employees of the University of Oldenburg who are closely associated with the OFFIS energy department.
Sustainable results
Reusability and traceability are increasingly at the centre of good scientific practice in energy informatics. The methods and tools developed in research and development projects, but also by doctoral students within their dissertations, often produce results with this claim. Over the years, numerous papers were presented in the doctoral workshop, which have meanwhile - at least in the respective working groups - become an established tool in energy informatics research.
Tools and Methods in Smart Grid Research" workshops
Some of this work was presented in detail in the workshop "Tools and Methods in Smart Grid Research", which was conducted for the second time in the context of D-A-CH Energieinformatik. On the initiative of OFFIS and under the umbrella of the GI Fachgruppe Energieinformatik, two energy informatics working groups presented their tools and methods this year - again accompanied by intensive discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of the presented work.
Frank Marten from the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Systems Engineering presented the test and simulation tool OpSim, which focuses on the simulation of cross-voltage energy system scenarios.
Goran Lastro from Salzburg University of Applied Sciences presented experiences with the SGAM Toolbox, a modeling tool for smart grid software systems, and discussed possible future developments of the tool.
Energy Informatics 2018 at the place of foundation
Both workshops were a complete success with active participation and lively discussions and are already planned for the next energy informatics conference. The next D-A-CH Energy Informatics (EnInf) will take place at OFFIS in Oldenburg in October 2018 and will thus return to the place of foundation after 2012. This conference, which is now highly regarded in the D-A-CH energy informatics community, aims at networking the research community of the three countries and exchanging new findings. For the coming year, a stronger involvement of the industry is also planned, which is strongly committed within the framework of the flagship projects from the "Showcase Intelligent Energies" (SINTEG), a promotional initiative of the BMWi.
