HCI International 2021 - Late Breaking Papers: Multimodality, eXtended Reality, and Artificial Intelligence
The work of ensuring safety at sea is characterised by the spatial separation between operators in control rooms (CRO) and operators in the field (FO), such as maritime patrols. In this process, the FOs are assigned by the CROs to check reports of vessels behaving anomalously at the scene of the incident. In order to carry out this type of assignment correctly and avoid misjudgements, FOs must be able to develop accurate situational awareness (SA). However, this often proves difficult. On the one hand, situations involving vessels with abnormal behaviour are challenging for an FO to oversee from his normal perspective. On the other hand, the spatial separation from the CRO who assigned the verification of the anomaly report complicates the flow of information. To mitigate these problems, our approach is to support the FO in his work by means of augmented reality (AR). In this way, we believe we can improve the SA of the FO, which will lead to fewer errors in the assessment of anomalies. We have developed an AR application specifically for maritime FOs, which we have tested in a pilot study on test subjects. For the pilot study, selected scenarios with anomalies at sea were transferred to a meadow. Our hypothesis is that with AR support, misclassification of anomaly reports can be reduced by at least
