GIZ WB Green Agenda - Decarbonization of the Electricity Sector in the Western Balkans

Motivation

In the Sofia Declaration on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB), the WB6 pledged to achieve full climate neutrality by 2050. Except for Albania, which primarily uses hydropower for electricity, the Western Balkan countries must replace about 50% of their electricity generation capacity by 2030. Preparedness of knowledge building for stakeholders of WB countries is highly important for increasing awareness, confidence, and cooperation among them for the clean energy transition and ensure competitiveness in the European market. To decarbonize the power sector and ensure competitiveness in the European market,  preparedness of knowledge building for stakeholders of WB countries is highly important for increasing awareness, confidence, and cooperation among them for the clean energy transition.

Goal

The regional project "Green Agenda: Decarbonising the Electricity Sector in the Western Balkans," funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (GIZ) GmbH, aims to strengthe the confidence of key power sector actors in climate-friendly energy transition.

Decarbonizing the electricity sector requires implementing smart grid technology and building capacity for stakeholders and practitioners in Western Balkan countries. OFFIS and its consortium are keen to support GIZ with strategic-regulatory consultancy services and the application of international best practices for RE grid integration tailored to the WB region. This support would help policymakers, power system operators, and the energy community become familiar with the challenges and opportunities of high renewable energy (RE) penetration, enabling them to design proactive policies and regulatory frameworks for the green energy transition.
